Hidden Paris: Maurizio Cattelan at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

Emmanuel Perrotin, one of the top private contemporary art gallerists in Paris, has drawn in the arty throngs to his galleries since the 90s with shows from his impressive stable of artists which includes big names such as Takashi Murakami, Sophie Calle, Xavier Veilhan and Tatiana Trouve. At the end of 2010, Perrotin affirmed his ceaseless ascension by opening, during la crise no less, an extension to one of his two Marais galleries. But amongst the futuristic new space and the spectacular solo shows is a little gem that is featured in the gallery on a permanant basis: Lift, a witty installation of two miniature elevators by the prankster Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The lilliputian lifts are perfect replicas right down to the tiniest details - on approaching the mini doors, a sensor detects movement and the lift doors open with a familiar "ding", there are mini buttons inside the lift and we can see if it is going up or down.

But on our last visit, try as we might, we were just too damn big to get in, so we had to make do with the (very swanky new brushed aluminum) stairs...
