Afghani - Restaurant

A couple of weeks ago I was chatting to Erica from Hip Paris about the 18th arrondissement, an area in which I have lived for over five years. We were exchanging notes on our favourite restaurants in the neighbourhood and Afghani came up - a long standing Afghan eatery (as the name would suggest) just in the foothills of Montmartre, to which I had been meaning to go for a long time but just never got round to sampling.

So a couple of nights later rather than going to my regular local haunts of La Pulcinella, Pink Flamingo, Francis Labutte or Cheri Bibi, I ventured 5 minutes uphill to Afghani and discovered a little bijou space bedecked in authentic Afghan paraphernelia (including tapestries, 70s-style cloaks and musical instruments) packed with animated diners devouring regional specialities. There are meat and vegetarian dishes alike, both featuring kidney beans, lentils and chickpeas galore, accompanied by rice and bread in a curry kind of way. Main courses come in at about 12 euros and are really quite delicious. I had the leek ravioli with kidney beans and it really was quite different and truly yum. Afghani is now on my list of local, laid back, yummy and good value eateries in the 18th to visit sans moderation (thanks, Erica!).

  1. thanks! as a resident of the 18th I'm always looking for good places around here, too - it's hard to find the true gems amongst all the choice! will give it a try.

  4. So, i checked this place out last week thanks to your recommendation. I went there with a couple of friends and all of us really enjoyed our meals (I don't know the name of mine but it was the ravioli with the beef - also nice was the lamb & rice). And, the service was really very lovely. Happy to have discovered another yummy and reasonable restaurant so close to home!
