DELMONTEL PÂTISSIER

Good pâtisseries in Paris? There are many: Fauchon, Ladurée, Pierre Hermé.... If you want a good bit of cakeage, Paris is probably one of the best places in the world to get your sugar-butter-cream fix. But what if you don't want to shell out €8 on a pastry? Or you don't want to queue for half an hour with all the tourists to even get into the shop? Well, bakeries are a dime a dozen in the capital, but you don't want a floppy gelatinous piece o' crap from any old place, either. So it's always a pleasure to go to neighbourhood pâtisseries that rock. A little place on an unsuspecting road that makes damn good cakes with out a ridiculous price tag or a half hour wait. We thoroughly recommend Delmontel on the hip rue des Martyrs for this very reason. Not only does the former title holder of the best baguette in Paris (2007) make beautiful cakes but there are also savoury delights and delish deli type foodstuffs (brocolli and feta salad got our mouths watering on our visit). Yum.

  1. I have to agree - I was just in there the other day and their cakes are quite amazingly beautiful! (but I still prefer Pierre Hermes for the macarons....that's always been my fav!)

  2. Thanks for the comment. I agree - Pierre Herme is the don for macaroons, but Delmontel is pretty damn good and you don't have to wade through the hype to get through the doors! Also love the Ispahan at Laduree. Just love cakes in general, thinking about it....

  3. When I worked in the 9th, I'd walk 15 minutes to get my lunch from there!
